1942-P Wartime Silver Jefferson Nickel – Circulated

Because nickel was a critical strategic metal vital to the WWII war effort, the U.S. Mint altered the composition of five-cent coins starting mid-1942 to a silver-copper-manganese alloy. To easily distinguish them, the mint placed a large mint mark (P, D, or S) on the reverse above the dome of Monticello.
